Signs of winter

by bob on January 15, 2012

So you look out your window and see frost or snow on the neighbours roof.
You look in the mirror and see last season’s festivities hanging around your waist and the long dark days under your lifeless eyes. The new year’s promises are a distant memory. It’s January and Frrrrreeeeeebruary is next. Yup, you-got-the-blues. So whatcha gonna do…..

I like this time of year. It’s a time when I have a good excuse to take off, refresh and plan for the next game in business. Winter is going to come every year and you can get out and enjoy it a bit but the rest of the time you can complain or create. Take your pick. IT’s your life.

So since I’m in the sign business I usually spend time planning on new equipment, checking out new products or any of a host of other things that I don’t have time to do when business is crazy busy.
If you are starting a business, or running one that’s been around a long time, it’s always a good idea to step back and reevaluate everything. One of the most important and most overlooked things in business is the down to earth marketing that signs provide. When I say signs I am including store front signs , banners, truck graphics, interior signs, trade show displays , parking sign and way finding signs. All of these species of signs serve different but similar functions in your business, whether it is retail, industry, services, real estate, property management or what have you. The job of a sign is to inform, direct someone to act and to leave the reader better informed and motivated to a particular action in a matter of seconds.

So how do you think about your signs. If you are like most people, it’s not something you give much thought to after you had your last one installed 20 years ago or you haven’t given it a thought because your new premises has taken all your time and energy to think about the miriad of other things a business throws at you. So , sign purchases become last minute decision and unfortunately that may be what it looks like when it is done. Believe me, I have no delusions that I will be able to change this. But what if you spent a few minutes, hours or days in this off season to review your signage, both permanent and short term types. Then do a little Googling to see what others have done. It doesn’t take long to get the creative and competetive juices flowing. Then contact your sign company and run it past them (or us :) and see what can be done with a budget you can afford. A little time spent now can save you lots of money, time and mistakes during the busy season.

So look at today as an opportunity to make tomorrow better.
